Qala Saints regained hopes to be challengers for promotion with a win over bottom placed Zebbug Rovers.  Qaa were the better side on the field and paved the way to the win with three goals scored during the first period.  Zebbug managed to remain in contention for the first half hour of play but they suffered a setback when they conceded Qala’s second goal and never managed to produce a decent reaction.

Qala opened the score on 16 minutes when Michael Mumford entered the area with a solo action and placed in goal with a low shot.  Zebbug produced a reaction and leveled the sore on 21 minutes through a direct free kick by Marcos Peres Vega that ended out of the reach of Qaa’s keeper.  The match in the following phase of the encounter became moiré balanced but on 31 minutes Qala regained the lead through a shot from an angled position by Michael Mumford that surprised goalie Baskal Saliba.  Seven minutes later Qala added another goal when Jake Mifsud released Martin Buttigieg who fired in goal with a low shot.

After the break Qala maintained their supremacy over their opponents and on 58 minutes they could have scored another goal but a strike by Fatos Zeqiri ended wide.  On 65 minutes the same Zeqiri entered Zebbug’s area but goalie Baskal Saliba was well placed and the latter blocked the danger. Zebbug tried to increase their efforts during the final stages of the encounter and on 69 minutes they were dangerous through a free kick by Matthion Formosa that was cleared by goalie Omar Xuereb.  On 76 minutes Zebbug’s Marco Ciangura had a cross shot that ended high but until the end of the match Qala administered their two-goal lead so that Zebbug did not manage to create serious danger.

Referee: Joseph Agius
