SUMMARY

In the main match from Match-Day 2 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division Victoria Hotspurs and Xewkija Tigers earned a point each from a goalless draw so that the two sides dropped their first points in the championship.  The match was well contested where the two defensive departments prevailed over the respective strikers. The Hotspurs created more attempts at goal during the first half but Xewkija held territorial supremacy for most of the second period.  However, at the end the two sides failed to capitalise from their respective best scoring opportunities so that the outcome of the direct clash between two of the hot favourites was that of a just result.

TIMELINE

Play for most of the first period was balanced but the Hotspurs managed to conclude their play into more attempts at goal.

3’ Victoria’s Christian Mercieca unmarked Emiliano Lattes who tried a first timer that ended away from Xewkija’s goal.

4’ Xewkija’s keeper Mark Grima saved with some difficulty to a corner a close ranged shot by Elton Da Silva following a solo action.

8’ Victoria were again dangerous but a header by Andrew Mizzi following a corner kick by Shaun Bajada, ended on top of the net.

11’ Xewkija replied through a strike form outside the area by Jose Carlos Nogueira Junior that was well saved by Victoria’s keeper Adrian Parnis.

19’ Victoria’ Andrew Mizzi was at the right place following a free kick by Shaun Bajada but the former headed badly and the ball ended wide.

36’ a header by Victoria’s central defender El Mehdi Sidqy following a free kick by Emiliano Lattes was weak and easily neutralised by goalie Mark Grima.

37’ The same goalkeeper was well placed to save in two attempts a shot by Victoria’s Shaun Bajada.

The Hotspurs tried to put more pressure on their opponents during the final stages of the first half but Xewkija created more danger following counter breaks.

43’ Xewkija’s Charles Hili tried to surprise Victoria’s goalie with a header form the edge of the area following a cross by Nogueira Junior but the ball ended away from goal.

45’ Xewkija lost their best scoring opportunity of the encounter when a low cross by Claudio Frances from the right flank surprised Victoria’s defence as Jackson De Lima made way for the ball to arrive to his team mates but Rodney Buttigieg and Nogueira Junior failed to take the opportunity and the ball ended wide.

HT (0-0)

Xewkija came out more aggressive for the second period and held command of the midfield for most of the time.

46’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis was called to make a good save after just 48 seconds of play into the second period following a fine strike by Nogueira Junior.

47’ Xewkija’s Rodney Buttigieg placed in goal with a low shot but the referee disallowed the action for an offside infringement.

51’ Xewkija were again dangerous but a shot by Claudio Frances ended just over the crossbar.

52’ The Hotspurs replied through an initiative by Henrique Maciel who released Christian Mercieca on the right flank but the latter had his close rnaged attempt well blocked by goalie Mark Grima and the defence cleared the danger form the area.

70’ Xewkija’s substitute John Camilleri managed to arrive on the ball following a pass by Claudio Frances but Victoria’s keeper was well placed and nuetralised the danger without difficulty.

71’ Jackson Lima passed towards Jose Carlos Nogueira Junior who was outside the area but the latter saw his shot on the run turned to a corner with difficulty by Victoria’s keeper Adrian Parnis.

82’ The Hotspurs took advantage of more space within Xewkija’s territory and could have scored when Elton Da Silva entered the area after receiving form Henrique Maciel but the former saw his shot ending on the side of the net.

85’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis denied Xewkija’s Claudio Frances from scoring with an effective intervention to neutralise the shot from outside the area.
