SUMMARY

In the last match from Match-Day 6 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the second division, Munxar Falcons obtained a close win over Zebbug Rovers and ended up earning the first points in the campaign.  This was also the first match of the second round for the two sides. Zebbug were aiming to register the second consecutive win in an attempt to move closer to the upper part of the table, while Munxar were aiming to end their stretch of five consecutive defeats conceded in their first five matches of the second division league.  As a result, the two sides gave importance to this encounter and at the match turned out into a well-contested match where the outcome remained uncertain until the final whistle. Munxar managed to clinch the win with a goal scored midway through the second period but they were also rewarded as they were well deployed at their defence and managed to keep Zebbug’s prolific striker Tiago Barbosa under surveillance throughout the ninety minutes.  Zebbug, however, tried hard to earn a positive result from this match but they were erratic in their finishing and despite their strong efforts, they left the field of play empty-handed.

TIMELINE

Zebbug came out more aggressive and dictated matters during the opening minutes of the encounter.

3’ Munxar’s keeper Frankie Azzopardi was called to make a good save following a strike from a good position by Lucas Farrugia.

5’ The Rovers were again dangerous but an effort by Tiago Barbosa ended wide.

9’ Munxar replied through a shot from long distance by Luke Cilia that was easily neutralised by goalie Baskal Saliba.

Munxar recovered from the difficult start and as time passed by they became more offensive in their play.

26’ Munxar created their best scoring opportunity but a shot from an ideal position by Aaron Buttigieg ended over the crossbar.

42’ Zebbug replied through a personal action by Frank Attard but the striker saw his attempt from outside the area that ended away from Munxar’s goal.

HT (0-0)

For the second period, Zebbug tried to regain territorial supremacy.

7’ Zebbug’s Brazilian striker Tiago Barbosa missed the target.

11’ The Rovers lost a good scoring opportunity when Munxar’s defence failed to clear the ball from the area following a free-kick by Frank Attard, but Marvic Grima concluded badly from an angled position.

15’ (0-1) Munxar scored the goal that at the end decided the issue when Derek Paul Borg released Luke Cilia inside Zebbug’s area and the latter netted with a low drive.

21’ Zebbug went very close to levelling the score but an attempt directly from a free-kick by Tiago Barbosa was saved with difficulty to a corner by goalie Frankie Azzopardi.

24’ The same goalkeeper was again well placed and saved a close-ranged header by Tiago Barbosa following a corner kick by substitute Elijah Xuereb.

26’  Munxar lost a good opportunity to double the score when Cleiton Jose Hinrichs released Luke Cilia inside Zebbug’s area but the latter saw his low shot blocked by goalie Baskal Saliba.

34’ Zebbug’s Oliver Farrugia had a low shot from outside the area that ended just wide.

45+2’ Zebbug had their best opportunity to level the score when Munxar’s defence failed to clear the ball from the area following a corner action and form the resultant melee Omar Calleja’s close-range attempt was blocked on the goal line by goalie Frankie Azzopardi.
