SUMMARY

St Lawrence Spurs confirmed their good moment of form after a disappointing start in the campaign and ended the first round with a precious 3-1 win over Munxar Falcons.  With this result, the Spurs consolidated their third spot on the table and re-opened the possibility to join the teams who are challenging for promotion. In this match, the two sides were aiming for the win as the Spurs needed points to remain in the upper part of the table while Munxar are still seeking the first positive result in the campaign.  St Lawrence paved the way to the win with goals scored at the early stages of each half and for most of the time, they managed to control Munxar’s reaction.

TIMELINE

St Lawrence surprised Munxar during the opening minutes and took the driving seat as they scored an early goal.

2’ (1-0) The Spurs opened the score in their first serious attempt at goal when Charlon Farrugia released  Matthias Michael Uzor who netted with a low shot.

22’ Munxar could have levelled the score but Kenneth Mizzi concluded high from close distance following a cross from the left flank by Luke Attard.

32’ St Lawrence were again dangerous through a free kick by Charlon Farrugia that was saved to a corner with difficulty by Munxar’s goalie Damien Spiteri.

35’ St Lawrence’s defence failed to clear the ball from the goalmouth and from the resultant melee both Kenneth Mizzi and Luke Cilia failed to conclude towards goal and the defence managed to clear the danger with some difficulty.

37’ Munxar’s Luke Cilia entered St Lawrence’s area from the right flank but his final shot from a good position ended away from goal.

For the second period, the Spurs came out in better shape and held territorial supremacy for most of the time.

48’ Munxar’s keeper Damien Spiteri turned to a corner with some difficulty a free kick by Eman Bugeja.

51’ (2-0) St Lawrence doubled the score through a direct free kick by Charlon Farrugia that surprised completely Munxar’s goalkeeper.

65’ (3-0) Munxar were demoralised and St Lawrence capitalised form the good moment by scoring the third goal through Matthias Michael Uzor who entered the area with personal action and placed in goal after taking the rebound from the goalkeeper who blocked Uzor’s first attempt.

63’ (3-1) Munxar reduced the deficit when substitute Luke Meilaq entered St Lawrence’s territory and from his pass, Luke Cilia entered the area and netted with a low drive.

84’ Munxar could have reopened the issue but Aaron Buttigieg’s shot from a good position ended just over the crossbar.

89’ Munxar went again close to scoring through a shot by Ayesller Carvalho from outside the area that was saved to a corner by St Lawrence’s substitute goalkeeper Justin Grima and from the following prolonged corner action the ball arrived to an unmarked Kenneth Mizzi but the latter concluded high from close distance.
