Kercem Ajax registered their second consecutive win in the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division with two goals scored during the second period against Oratory Youths.  In this match Kercem struggled more than expected to take the lead as Oratory were determined to win their first point in the championship.  However, Kercem managed to break the deadlock from a penalty that arrived during the opening stages of the second period and took full control of play for the rest of the encounter.  The win for the Ajax was also deserved as they produced more scoring opportunities throughout the ninety minutes.

Timeline

Kercem saw more of the ball during the first half but the Youths were well deployed and also managed to threaten Kercem’s rear guard with effective breaks.

2’ Oratory could have capitalised better when Kercem’s defence hesitated to clear the ball from the area and Oratory’s striker Chris Borg took the ball but his lob over the goalkeeper ended over the crossbar.

19’ Kercem went very close to open the score when Samuel Saldanha entered Oratory’s area but his attempt was well saved by goalie Angelo Brignoli.

30’ The Ajax were also unlucky when a good shot by Anthony Zammit following a corner action was stopped by the post.

37’ Oratory through and attempt directly from a corner kick by Rafael Ledesma that was cleared off the fatal line by Kercem’s Jason Theuma.

42’ Kercem’s Andrew Mizzi released Samuel Saldanha within Oratory’s territory and the latter entered the area but his low shot was partially saved by goalie Angelo Brignoli and the defence cleared the danger form the goal mouth.

HT (0-0)

Kercem came out in a better shape for the second period as Oratory were aiming to remain in contention by defending the goalless draw.

8’ (1-0) penalty – Kercem were awarded a penalty as Oratory’s Jurgen Attard handled the ball inside the area in his attempt to clear the ball following a corner action and Samuel Saldanha converted form the spot kick.

Kercem were relieved and stated to dictate matters with more authority.

15’ (2-0) The Ajax doubled the score when a header by Andrew Mizzi following a corner kick by Anthony Zammit was stopped by the crossbar and from the rebound Joshua Buttigieg placed in goal from close distance.

25’ Kercem could have made sure of the win with another goal but Joshua Buttigieg incredibly concluded wide from an ideal position following an inviting low cross by Andrew Mizzi.

34’ Oratory went close to reduce the score when Eric Gauci crossed from the edge of the area but a header by Rafael Ledesma was saved to a corer by Oratory’s goalie Owen Xuereb.

36’ Kercem had their last opportunity to score the third goal when a cross by Owen Spiteri arrived to Samuel Saldanha who headed inside the area and the ball arrived to an unmarked Joshua Buttigieg, but the latter saw his shot from a good position that ended on the side of the net.
