Xaghra United registered a close win over Oratory Youths in the clash between two sides from the first division from the preliminary round of the BOV GFA Cup.  In this match, Oratory saw more of the ball but they were often sterile in attack so that Xaghra managed to control play and clinched the qualification with a goal that arrived near the end of the first half.

Timeline

Oratory took territorial supremacy from the opening stages but Xaghra managed to resist and neutralised the offensive efforts of their opponents.

14’ Xaghra’s keeper Owen Attard was well placed to block a low shot by Daniel Atzori who was in an ideal position.

17’ The same goalkeeper was again at the right place to neutralise in two attempts a shot from close distance by Daniel Atzori.

21’ In another good action by Oratory a header by David Galea from a cross by Jurgen Attard ended just high.

40’ (1-0) Xaghra scored the goal that decided the issue when the ball arrived to an unmarked Savio Galea from a corner kick by Anto Okamura and the latter concluded in goal with a low shot.

43’ Oratory replied with a personal action by Jurgen Mario Portelli who entered the area but his shot ended on the side of the net.

HT (1-0)

After the break Oratory struggled to produce a reaction and their offensive play continued to be sterile.

21’ Xaghra went very close to double the score but a free kick by Anto Okamura was stopped by the crossbar.

31’ In another break by Xaghra United a strike by Francesco Attard was well saved by Oratory’s keeper Angelo Brignoli.

Oratory increased their efforts during the final stages of the encounter.

40’ Oratory had a good scoring opportunity when Keith Farrugia delivered the ball inside Xaghra’s area from a free kick but substitute Sintayehu Curmi had his attempt from an angled position that was well saved by goalie Owen Attard.

45’ Oratory missed another good scoring opportunity and lost the chance to force extra time when Xaghra’s rear guard found it difficult to clear the ball from the area following a cross by substitute Gabriel Vella but Sintayehu Curmi saw his shot from a good position that ended wide.
