Stb Lawrence Spurs obtained their first points in the campaign in their seventh match where they managed to register a 3-1 win over Zebbug Rovers.  The Spurs dominated over Zebbug throughout the encounter because they were determined to clinch the first positive result after six disappointing matches, while Zebbug might have been overconfident as they were facing the team at the bottom of the table. With this result Zebbug also lost the opportunity to take the second spot on the table.

At Lawrence’s win was well deserved despite the fact that they were trailing by one goal at the end of the first half.  The Spurs created a number of open scoring opportunities but Zebbug’s keeper Francesco Galea for most of the time managed to deny the strikers from scoring with a series of important interventions.  However, St Lawrence kept insisting and at the end their efforts were rewarded as they turned the result in their favour.

Timeline:

15’ (0-1) Zebbug opened the score against the run of play through a direct corner kick by Owen Mercieca that surprised St Lawrence’s defence.

18’ St Lawrence could have levelled the score when Mohammed Senussi Telessi entered Zebbug’s area from the right flank but his close ranged shot was again blocked by goalie Francesco Grima.

19’ St Lawrence were again dangerous when Zebbug’s defence cleared badly a cross form the right flank and the ball arrived to Karl Formosa who tried to conclude with an overhead kick but Zebbug’s goalie managed to clock the ball and to clear away the danger to a corner.

23’ Zebbug’s keeper continued to be the main protagonist of the first half and made another important save following a shot from close distance by Mohammed Senussi Tellessi who entered the area with a personal action form the left flank.

42’ St Lawrence’s Christian Grima had the last opportunity for his side to level the score after receiving from Karl Formosa but the former saw his shot that ended wide.

HT (0-1)

St Lawrence kept insisting from the first minutes of play of the second period.

1’ A strike by St Lawrence’s Karl Formosa got a deflection and ended in a corner.  From the resultant corner action a close ranged header by Mohammed Senussi Telessi was stopped by the post.

12’ (1-1) St Lawrence scored the equaliser through Karl Formosa entered Zebbug’s territory in a counter break and placed in goal with a low shot.

15’ Zebbug’s goalie Francesco Galea left his position in time and managed to clear the ball from his area to deny substitute Matias Camilleri Psaila from concluding towards goal from a good position.

20’ St Lawrence could have capitalised better but a strike by Mohammed Senussi Telessi ended wide.

25’ Zebbug’s keeper Francesco Galea was again called to make an intervention to turn to a corner a free kick from long distance by Christian Grima.

37’ Zebbug replied with a free kick by Aaron Touarha that ended wide.

40’ Zebbug protested for a penalty when St Lawrence’s defender Daniel Micallef could have handled the ball in his attempt to clear the ball before substitute Orlando Atzori could arrive to hit the ball from a good position.

44’ Zebbug’s keeper was again called to make a good intervention to stop a close ranged shot by Miohammed Senussi Telessi.
