Ghajnsielem remained in contention to challenge for another competition in Gozitan football as they obtained qualification to the semi-finals of the BOV GFA Knock-Out Competition for the first division with a large win over SK Victoria Wanderers.  The Blacks dominated the match and forced the Wanderers on the defensive for most of the encounter.

They opened a two-goal lead by the end of the first half and added more goals after the break.  The Wanderers, who are currently occupying the last place on the table of the top flight, tried to avoid a heavy defeat particularly because they had regular goalkeeper Giacomo Ratto, midfielder Nicholas Vella and striker Aud-Gustine James Obaje missing due to an injury.  Ghajnsielem will now meet Victoria Hotspurs in the semi-final stage of this competition.

Timeline:

Ghajnsielem produced pressure on Victoria’s defence from the early minutes of the encounter and they produced a number of good scoring opportunities.  Ghajnsielem’s strikers were often erratic while Victoria’s debutant goalkeeper Presley Clark did his best to overcome the tension of the encounter.

9’ Ghajnsielem’s Igor Nedeljkovic had a shot on the run that missed the target.

14’ The same Igor Nedeljkovic went again close to scoring but a direct free-kick was saved by goalie Presley Clark with the aid of the crossbar.

14’ An effort form a good position by Michael Bezzina ended high.

15’ Ghajnsielem’s Ryota Watanabe from an angled position missed the target.

16’ The Blacks lost a good scoring opportunity when Jhon Arboleda Valencia took the ball from the defence, entered the area but his low drive when he was face to face with the goalkeeper ended wide.

18’ (1-0) Ghajnsielem opened the score when Michael Bezzina entered Victoria’s area and from his low cross Kevin Farrugia had his first attempt that was partially blocked by the goalkeeper and the same player placed in goal from the rebound.

31’ (2-0) Ghajnsielem doubled the score when the ball arrived to Igor Nedeljkovic outside the area following an action that started from the left flank and Victoria’s young keeper was surprised with the weak shot by the Serbian striker.

38’ The Blacks were again dangerous through a shot from outside the area by Michael Bezzina that ended just wide.

41’ Victoria’s keeper Presley Clark made a good save to block an attempt by Jhon Arboleda Valencia.

HT (2-0)

Second Half

Ghajnsielem continued to produce pressure on Victoria’s defence after the break and insisted to score more goals in an attempt to register a large score.

6’ (3-0) Ghajnsielem added another goal when Shaun Attard released Igor Nedeljkovic within Victoria’s territory and the latter netted with a low shot when he was alone inside the area.

7’ (3-1) The Wanderers managed to reduce the deficit through a fine header by Sam Harland following a free kick by Fabricio Rozkiewicz that surprised substitute goalkeeper Luke Buttigieg.

12’ (4-1) Ghajnsielem scored the fourth goal from a direct free kick by Dejan Bogdanovic that ended out of the reach of Victoria’s keeper.

22’ (5-1) Ghajnsielem’s Jeferson De Sousa Ferreira, who came in as a substitute six minutes earlier, increased the lead for his side by concluding in goal from close distance following a corner action.

37’ The Wanderers threatened Ghajnsielem’s defence but goalie Luke Buttgieg left his position in time and punched away the ball at the edge of the area to deny Sam Harland from concluding towards goal.
