Oratory Youths had an excellent start in the second round of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division and obtained three precious points form a 2-0 win over Xewkija Tigers.  This was Oratory’s second win in the championship so that they moved to the sixth place on the table and left two teams behnd them in the rlegation zone, although the latter teams have a game in hand.  With this result Oratyory also took revenge over Xewkija for the defeat conceded in the match betwee the two sides o the first round.

The win for Oratory matured with two goals scored during the second period but for most of the encounter the Youths seemed more adventurous and at the end the final score was just.  Xewkija tried to take command of play during the opening stages but failed to capitalise from some scoring opportunities so that Oratory gained confidence as time passed by and created more dangerous scoring opportunities.

This result confirmed an important recovery for Oratory who passed through a difficult patch during the past month.  They were coming from a win in the quarter finals of the BOV GFA Cup the previous weekend and faced this match without much pressure but the required determination.  Oratory would undoubtedly gain more courage in their next commitments in the championship in their attempt to move away from the red zone as early as possible.

On the other hand Xewkija once again confirmed their inconsistent run this season.  In this match the Tigers had an opportunity to practically get away from the risk of the relegation zone with a win, but with this result they are still within the reach of all the teams who are struggling at the lower part of the table.

Timeline:

Play was quite balanced during the first period.  Xewkija seemed more offensive during the first part of the encounter and could have opened the score but the Youths were well organised at their defence and often threatened their opponents with counter breaks.

7’ Xewkija’s Emiliano Lattes incredibly missed the ball when he was at an ideal position so that Oratory’s defence managed to clear the danger.

10’ Oratory replied through an attempt by Haraan Hajazan Goncalves Barbosa that was blocked to a corner by Xewkija’s keeper Emmanuel Cirrincione and from the resultant corner action the shot towards the far post by Joao Vitor Ferrari Silva ended just wide.

16’ A free kick by Xewkija’s Joseph George Vella ended over the crossbar.

17’ Oratory’s goalie Richard Sammut was well placed and saved a shot by Rodney Buttigeg.

20’ The same goalkeeper was called to make another good intervention to turn to a corner a low shot by Joseph George Vella.

33’ Xewkija missed a good scoring opportunity when Rodney Buttigieg incredibly concluded wide from close distance an inviting cross from the right flank by Matthias Mercieca.

38’ Oratory were again dangerous when Goncalves Barbosa unmarked Sintayehu Curmi but the latter had his shot that was saved in two attempts by goalie Emmanuel Cirrincione.

40’ The same Xewkija keeper was again placed at the right position and blocked a close ranged shot by Vinicius Ferreira.

Second Half

After the break Oratory seemed more motivated and became much more dangerous than their opponents.  The managed to take the lead and dominated over Xewkija for the rest of the encounter.

3’ Oratory had a good attempt through a cross shot by Goncalves Barbosa but the ball got a deflection and play resumed with a corner kick.

5’ The same Goncalves Barbosa had a shot from a good position that ended wide.

14’ The Youths once again threatened Xewkija’s area when the ball arrived to an unmarked Vinicius Ferreira from a corner action but the striker had his shot blocked by the defence.

17’ (1-0) penalty – Oratory were awarded a penalty for a foul by Josmar Vella on Pablo Vinicius De Moraes Ferreira and the same Brazilian striker opened the score with his shot form the spot kick.

Xewkija’s reaction was sterile.

22’ (2-0) Oratory doubled the score when Vinicius Ferreira won the ball in the midfield and released Haraan Hajazan Goncalves Barbosa who entered Xewkija’s area, turned around the goalkeeper and placed easily into an open goal.

26’  Oratory could have scored another goal but a header by Joao Vitor Ferrari Silva from a corner kick by Karl Formosa ended just wide.

32’  In another good action by the Youths Vinicius Ferreira entered Xewkija’s area with a personal action but his low drive aimed towards the far post ended wide.

36’ Xewkija could have reopened the issue when Rodney Buttigeig won the ball inside Oratory’s are but his shot from an ideal position was blocked to a corner by goalie Richard Sammut.

37’  In another offensive action by Xewkija, goalie Richard Sammut punched away a cross shot by Haruna Shodija Shola and from the resultant clearance the effort by Rodney Buttigieg was blocked by the defence.

43’ Xewkija protested for a penalty for a foul on Haruna Shodija Shola who managed to hit the ball but goalie Richard Sammut saved without difficulty.

45+3’ Oratory could have added another goal but a fine strike by Vinicius Ferreira following a personal action ended just over the crossbar.
