Munxar Falcons consolidated their second spot on the table with the three points obtained from a 2-0 win over bottom-placed Gharb Rangers.  The Falcons are therefore very close to earning the possibility to contest the play-off for a place in the top flight next season with the team that ends at the second place from the bottom of the first division.

Munxar’s win matured with a goal scored in each half.  Gharb seemed determined to challenge their more quoted opponents during the first part of the encounter but Munxar managed to take the lead minutes before half time so Gharb struggled to produce a reaction after the break, while Munxar made sure of the win by scoring the second goal.

Timeline

Gharb had a better start and was more offensive than their opponents.  The Rangers however failed to capitalise from their good patch of play and ended the first half trailing by one goal.

4’ Gharb’s Joseph Cefai Farrugia had an attempt from a free-kick that was saved to a corner by goalie Daniel Galea.

10’ The Rangers were again dangerous when Rodrigo Apestegui Duran had a strike from a long distance that missed the target.

12’ Munxar continued to suffer Gharb’s play and a header by Andrew Borg following a corner kick by Joseph Cefai Farrugia ended just wide.

15’ A direct free kick by Gharb’s Joseph Cefai Farrugia got a deflection from the defence to a corner and from the resultant corner kick by Marco Ciangura, the header by Mario Theuma was well saved by goalie Daniel Galea.

24’ Munxar replied with a shot on the run by Kenneth Mizzi that was well saved by goalie Owen Xuereb.

25’ Munxar’s goalie Daniel Galea was called to make a good save to block a free-kick from a long distance by Mario Theuma.

34’ Munxar were again dangerous through a shot from outside the area by Mario Azzopardi that was deflected to a corner by the defence and from the resultant corner kick by Luke Portelli, a header by Ayesller Carvalho ended wide.

35’ Gharb replied through an effort by Gabriel Debrincat following a personal action that ended wide.

40’ Munxar opened the score when Paul Parnis delivered a cross inside Gharb’s area that arrived at Ayesller Carvalho who controlled well and placed behind goalie Owen Xuereb with a curling shot.

42’ Gharb’s reaction arrived with a strike from outside the area by Rodrigo Apestegui Duran that was well saved by goalie Daniel Galea.

HT (0-1)

Second Half

Gharb tried to produce a reaction after the break but Munxar seemed more confident and managed to keep control of play.

48’ Gharb could have capitalised better when Munxar’s keeper partially saved a free-kick from long distance by Mario Theuma but from the rebound, Carlos Cutajar concluded high.

24’ (0-2) penalty Munxar practically sealed the win by scoring the second goal when Gharb’s keeper Owen Xuereb partially saved an attempt by Luke Portelli and from the rebound Gharb’s defender Andrew Borg committed a foul on Mario Azzopardi.  The referee awarded a penalty and Aysesller Carvalho doubled the score with his shot from the spot-kick.

35’ The Falcons could have scored another goal but a shot from long distance by Mario Azzopardi ended just high.
