Oratory Youths and Kercem Ajax earned a point each from a draw of six goals in a match from Match-Day 16 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division.  The point was a just result as the two sides produced offensive play in an attempt to obtain the win.  Oratory needed the full points at stake to move away from the relegation zone, while Kercem needed the three points to retain a chance to challenge for the runners-up position.  In the end, Oratory left the field of play disappointed for giving away a two-goal lead during the final stages of the encounter and the point obtained does not improve their status on the standings.  On the other hand, Kercem were only satisfied as they were rewarded for their efforts in chasing a positive result but they could not be satisfied enough as they dropped more points from second place on the table.

The match was quite entertaining with an outcome that was uncertain until the final whistle.  Oratory was in the driving seat for most of the encounter and was leading by two goals until four minutes from the end of regular time.  The Youths however conceded a strong reaction by Kercem who managed to score two goals in the space of two minutes during the dying moments to save the result.

Timeline

Play for most of the first half was quite interesting as Kercem tried to take command of the play but the Youths were well deployed and threatened their opponents with effective breaks so that the two sides had their respective chances to score.

8’ Kercem had the first opportunity to open the score but a header by Euller Da Silva Rodrigues from a corner kick by Sebastien Martinez Turizo ended wide.

14’ The Ajax created an open scoring opportunity when Wesley Simeao Dos Santos passed through Oratory’s defence with personal action and arrived face to face with the goalkeeper but the striker concluded badly and keeper Angelo Brignoli blocked the danger.

14’ Oratory’s keeper was well placed and neutralised without much difficulty a strike from an angled position by Andrew Mizzi.

17’ Oratory’s first attempt towards goal arrived from a free-kick by Karl Formosa that ended just over the crossbar.

21’ The Youths could have capitalised better when Joao Vitor Ferrari Silva took the ball from an ideal position following a prolonged action but concluded badly and the ball ended away from goal.

25’ The Ajax missed another good opportunity to take the lead when Nathaniel Mercieca delivered the ball inside Oratory’s area from a corner kick, Luiz Henrique Santana Motta headed the ball that arrived at Joshua Buttigieg who lifted over the crossbar from close distance.

39’ Kercem’s goalie Gaetano Bugeja was well placed and saved a free kick by Pablo Vinicius De Moraes Ferreira.

42’ (1-0) Oratory opened the score when Pablo Vinicius De Moraes Ferreira surprised the goalkeeper with a shot from outside the area.

Second Half

Oratory took the driving seat from the beginning of the second period as they seemed more confident and scored the second goal at an early stage.  Kercem showed character as they came out of a difficult patch and produced a determined reaction to recover a two-goal deficit during the final stages and saved the result.

4’ (2-0) penalty Oratory doubled the score when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Nicholas Inguanez on Goncalves Barbosa and Pablo Vinicius De Moraes Ferreira converted from the spot-kick.

9’ (2-1) Kercem reopened the issue when they reduced the deficit through a goal that arrived with a shot directly from a free-kick by Euller Da Silva Rodrigues.

17’ The Youths were again dangerous through a header by Joao Vitor Ferrari Silva from a free-kick by Pablo Vinicius De Moraes Ferreira that ended just over the crossbar.

19’ (3-1) Oratory scored their third goal when they operated a break from a through pass by substitute Daniel Azzopardi and Haraan Hajazan Goncalves Barbosa entered Kercem’s area and netted with a fine shot that ended out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

25’ (protests for penalty) Oratory protested for a penalty following a challenge between Kercem’s Nathaniel Mercieca and Oratory Goncalves Barbosa.

29’ Kercem replied with a low shot aimed towards the far post by substitute Chris Camilleri after receiving from Sebastien Martinez Turizo that ended just wide.

30’ Oratory were again dangerous through a personal action by substitute Daniel Atzori who entered the area but had his low shot from an angled position that was cleared from the goalmouth by defender Nicholas Inguanez.

31’ The Youths missed another good opportunity to make sure of the win by adding another goal when Pablo Vinicius De Moraes Ferreira passed through the defence but his shot from close distance missed the target.

33’ Kercem could have punished their opponents for the missed chances when Oratory’s keeper failed to clear the ball from a long-ranged free-kick by substitute Chris Camilleri and from the resultant melee, the attempt towards an open goal by Luiz Henrique Santana Motta was cleared from the fatal line by central defender Joao Vitor Ferrari Silva.

34’ In another dangerous action within Kercem’s area a shot by Wesley Simeao Dos Santos was blocked by the defence to a corner.

41’ (3-2) Kercem managed to re-open their hopes to save the result when they reduced the arrears through a shot by Wesley Simeao Dos Santos following a cross by Euller Da Silva Rodrigues with the ball ending in goal despite the attempt by the goalkeeper to block the danger.

43’ (3-3) Kercem scored the equaliser when Euller Da Silva Rodrigues defended the ball on the edge of the area following a cross from the right flank and from his pass Luiz Henrique Santana Motta fired a shot that got a deflection and the ball ended away from the reach of the goalkeeper and into the net.

45+2’ (red card) Oratory ended the match with ten players when substitute Daniel Azzopardi was sent off after receiving the second yellow card for a foul in the midfield on Wesley Simeao Dos Santos.
