Nadur Youngsters and Oratory Youths shared the spoils in a draw of two goals, both scored during the first half, and with the point obtained Nadur missed an opportunity to remain at the top of the table while Oratory registered their third consecutive positive result and consolidated their mid-table position.

Nadur were favourites to obtain a win from this encounter but Oratory confirmed their good moment of form and for most of the time they shared play and were as dangerous as their more quoted opponents.  Nadur increased their efforts during the final stages but they failed to capitalise on dangerous situations within Oratory’s area.  Overall, the outcome of this encounter was a just result as it rewards the efforts of the two sides to obtain the win.

Timeline:

The two teams were very aggressive during the first minutes of the encounter and both teams had potential scoring opportunities.  Nadur broke the deadlock but Oratory had an immediate reaction and the match turned out to be well contested.

2’ Nadur could have created more danger, but Marcelo Barbosa’s shot following a personal action missed the target.

5’ The Youths missed an opportunity to threaten Nadur’s defence when they operated a counterbreak with three strikers against one defender but Nadur recovered in time and blocked the danger at the edge of the area.

9’ Nadur were again dangerous through a shot from outside the area by Joseph Zammit following an initiative by Marcelo Barbosa but the ball ended high.

12’ (protests for penalty) Oratory protested for a penalty following a tackle by Nadur’s Ferreira Dos Santos on the Portuguese striker Castro Martins but the referee awarded a corner kick.  From the same corner action, taken by Almeida Lopes, a header by Joshua Buttigieg ended high.

17’ (0-1) Nadur opened the score through a shot from long distance by Marcelo Barbosa that surprised goalie Angelo Brignoli.

24’ (1-1) Oratory were not demoralised and scored the equaliser when Rian Almeida Lopes headed inside the area following a cross from the left flank by Leonardo Bruno Coca and Joshua Buttigieg lobbed over Nadur’s goalie with a fine header.

36’ Nadur went close to regaining the lead when Marcelo Barbosa released Joseph Zammit inside Oratory’s area but the latter saw his low shot that goalie Angelo Brignoli neutralised.

45+2’ The Youngsters were again dangerous through an attempt directly from a free kick by Marcelo Barbosa that ended over the crossbar.

45+3’ The same Barbosa passed inside Oratory’s area but from his inviting low pass Joseph Mario Vella incredibly lifted over the crossbar from an ideal position.

Second Half

The match continued to be quite interesting as the two sides tried to increase their efforts to obtain the win from this encounter.  However, the strikers were often erratic in their finishing and neither side managed to capitalise from their best scoring opportunities so that the outcome remained uncertain until the final whistle.

3’ Oratory went very close to take the lead when Nadur lost possession in the midfield but goalie Steve Sultana recovered his position in time to clear off the goalmouth the attempt from a long distance by Rian Almeida Lopes aimed towards an open goal.

14’ Nadur replied with a good shot from an angled position by Gianluca Muscat that got a deflection but the goalkeeper was well placed and blocked the danger.

17’ The same Gianluca Muscat tried to surprise Oratory’s goalie with a strike from a long distance but the ball ended just over the crossbar.

20’ Nadur’s goalie Steve Sultana was at the right place and saved a low shot by Rian Almeida Lopes following a personal action.

34’ (protests for penalty) Nadur protested for a penalty, claiming handling when a shot by Marcelo Pereira Muniz following a corner action was blocked by a defender.

42’Oratory’s goalie Angelo Brignoli saved the result for his side when he blocked a corner with difficulty a shot from a good position by substitute Brandon Said.

44’ Nadur missed another good opportunity when Brandon Said released the other substitute Joseph Xerri inside Oratory’s area but the latter saw his attempt end over the crossbar.

45+4’ Nadur’s last opportunity to clinch the win arrived through a strike from outside the area by Kurt Grima but Oratory’s goalie Angelo Brignoli deflected to a corner.

45+6’ (protests for penalty) Oratory protested for a penalty, alleging handling inside the area, when Nadur’s central defender Manwel Tabone blocked a cross from the left flank.
