SK Victoria Wanderers obtained three points from a large win over Ghajnsielem and with the points obtained they moved up to the third spot on the table.  This was Victoria’s second consecutive win in the championship and with this win, the Wanderers took revenge for the defeat conceded in the match against the same Ghajnsielem of the first round.

Victoria’s win matured with four goals scored during the first part of the encounter so that for most of the last hour of play the Citizens managed to neutralise Ghajnsielem’s efforts to re-open the issue.  The Wanderers were very effective in their play during the opening stages and capitalised from some lack of attention at Ghajnsielem’s defence so that they put their minds at rest from the three points at an early stage.  Victoria’s attitude however allowed Ghajnsielem to produce a reaction and on more than one occasion the Blacks created chances where they could have reduced the deficit.  Ghajnsielem were rewarded for their efforts during the final stages of the encounter when they scored three goals and made the final score more respectable.

Timeline:

The Wanderers came out determined to take command of play and managed to score two goals in a space of one minute they paved the way to open a lead with a large margin.  Ghajnsielem produced their best patch of play during the last part of the first half but they were erratic in their finishing and missed the opportunity to re-open the issue.

5’ The Wanderers created the first attempt towards Ghajnsielem’s goal through an initiative by Junior Conceicao Cabral but the Brazilian striker saw his low shot that ended wide.

11’ (0-1) Victoria opened the score when Junior Conceicao Cabral passed inside Ghajnsielem’s area and from his low pass Gabriel Farrugia netted with a fine low shot that ended out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

12’ (0-2) The Citizens doubled the lead when Ghajnsielem’s defence hesitated to clear a cross for the left flank by Kenneth Merceica and Caique Silvio Souza Da Silva took advantage and headed in goal from close distance.

17’ (0-3) Ghajnsielem continued to suffer Victoria’s play and the latter added another goal that arrived through a fine header by Junior Conceicao Cabral following another cross from the left flank by Kenneth Mercieca.

19’ Ghajnsielem replied with an attempt from a free kick by Bruno Da Cruz that was cleared to a corner by the defence.

20’ The Wanderers missed a good scoring opportunity when Marcus Vinicius Claudino Ramos delivered the ball in front of Ghajnsielem’s goal from a corner but Alexandre Galiani Lazarini incredibly lifted over the crossbar with an open goal at his mercy.

22’ Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg was well-placed and blocked an attempt directly from a free kick by Claudino Ramos.

24’ Ghajnsielem could have created more danger but a shot by Bruno Da Cruz ended away from Victoria’s goal.

26’ (crossbar) The Blacks could have reduced the score but a strike by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa hit the crossbar and the ball was cleared from the goalmouth when the rebound accidentally bounced on the back of Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis.

31’ (0-4) The Wanderers scored their fourth goal when Junior Vonceicao Cabral passed inside Ghajnsielem’s area and his low shot was blocked by the defence but the same striker took the ball from the rebound and fired in the net from an angled position.

36’ Ghajmsielem went again close to reduce the score but a header by Alberto Xuereb from a corner kick by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa was saved with difficulty by Victoria’s keeper Adrian Parnis.

42’ In another offensive action by Ghajnsielem, a shot by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa ended wide.

45’ (protests for penalty) Ghajnsielem protested for a penalty when Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa ended up on the floor when he was challenged by an opponent.

45+1’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis was again called to make an important intervention to block another effort by Ghajnsielem’s Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa.

HT (0-4)

Second Half

The match lost much of the interest during the first part of the second period as the Citizens extended their lead to six goals.  However, Ghajnsielem never threw away the towel.  They kept struggling and managed to score three goals to reduce the gap by half before the end of the encounter.

3’ (goal disallowed) Ghajnsielem could have reduced the score when Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa netted a low cross by Godwin Emmanuel but the goal was disallowed for offside.

6’ Vitoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis once again denied Ghajnsielem from scoring with a good intervention following an attempt by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa.

8’ (0-5) penalty Ghajnsielem were punished for the missed chances as the Wanderers increased their lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Marco Ciangura on Marcus Vinicius Claudino Ramos and the same player converted his shot from the penalty spot.

13’ (0-6) The Wanderers scored their sixth goal following a break by Emerson Zammit who entered Ghajnsielem’s area from the right flank and his cross Junior Conceicao Cabral concluded in goal from close distance.

16’ Ghajnsielem’s Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa could have created more danger when he took the ball from Victoria’s defence but his shot was neutralised by goalie Adrian Parnis.

27’ Victoria’s substitute goalkeeper Omar Xuereb was called to make a difficult save to turn to a corner an attempt directly from a free kick by Bruno Da Cruz.

28’ Ghajnsielem kept insisting and they went again very close to score when a shot by Kenny Hili arrived to Luiz Henrique Santana Motta but the latter saw his header turned to a corner with difficulty by goalie Omar Xuereb.

33’ The same goalkeeper was again called to make another save to turn to another corner an effort by Bruno Da Cruz.

36’ (1-6) Ghajnsielem managed to score their first goal when Godwin Emmanuel resisted the challenge for the ball by an opponent inside Victoria’s area and concluded in goal as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger.

41’ (2-6) Ghajnielem’s Godwin Emmanuel managed to score a second goal for his side when he took advantage of some open space in Victoria’s defence and placed in goal with a low shot.

43’ (3-6) Ghajnsielem continued to be dangerous during the dying moments of the encounter and scored a third goal that arrived through a tap-in by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa following an initiative by Godwin Emmanuel.

45’ (red card) The Blacks were reduced to ten players when Marco Ciangura was sent off for holding Junior Conceicao Cabral from running away alone within Ghajnsielem’s territory and therefore denying an open scoring opportunity.

45+2’ Ghajnsielem could have scored another goal but a header by Bruno Da Cruz was saved with some difficulty by Victoria’s goalie Omar Xuereb.
