Victoria Hotspurs took sole leadership of the BOV Gozo Football League of the second division with the points obtained from a 4-0 win over Sannat Lions.  With this result, the Hotspurs regained their status as the hot favourites to win promotion to the top flight as they opened a three-point lead over the same Sannat and five points over the other challengers Munxar Falcons.

The Hotspurs came out for this match more determined and dictated play for most of the ninety minutes of the encounter.  The Citizens scored an early goal and neutralised Sannat’s reaction so that they practically made sure of the victory by scoring the second goal just before halftime and added the third goal after a few minutes of play into the second period.

Timeline:

The Hotspurs were more aggressive from the initial stages of the encounter and during the opening stages, they produced pressure on Sannat’s defence.  Victoria scored an early goal and took the driving seat so Sannat struggled to produce a serious reaction within Victoria’s territory.

4’ (crossbar) Victoria Hotspurs went very close to open the score but a strike by Shaun Attard following a corner actin was stopped by the crossbar.

7’ (0-1) The Citizens took the lead through a shot from an angled position by Wellington Valentim De Souza following a personal action.

12’ Victoria’s central defender Daniel Farrugia risked committing an own goal when he tried to clear the ball from the danger area but the ball ended in a corner.

13’ Sannat’s goalie Kyle Attard was called to make a good intervention to block an effort by Wellington Valentim De Souza and from the rebound Victoria’s Lorenzo Atzori saw his header that ended over the crossbar.

18’  The Hotspurs were again dangerous through a shot by Shaun Attard that was well saved by Sannat’s keeper.

20’ Sannat could have created more danger but an attempt from a free kick by Boubacar Kanta was saved to a corner by Victoria’s goalie Richard Sammut.

35’ (0-2) The Hotspurs doubled their lead when Sannat’s defence failed to clear the ball from the danger area following a free kick by Joseph George Vella and Shaun Attard concluded in goal from close distance.

Second Half

Sannat tried to produce a reaction during eh opening minutes of the second period but missed their chance to reduce the deficit so they were immediately punished by Victoria who scored the third goal and practically made sure of the win for the Citizens.

6’ Sannat could have re-opened the issue when Boubacar Kanta delivered the ball towards Victoria’s goalmouth but the header by Gabriel Debrincat was blocked by the goalkeeper and from the resultant melee Nicholas Grima incredibly lifted the ball over the crossbar with an open goal at his mercy.

8’ (0-3) Victoria replied with a good break and scored the third goal through a good shot by Lorenzo Atzori.

11’ (crossbar) Sannat went very close to reducing the deficit but an attempt by substitute Paul was stopped by the crossbar.

12’  The same Paul Said once again created some danger to Victoria’s defence but his strike from outside the area was well saved by Victoiria’s goalie Richard Sammut.

30’  The Hotspurs went again very close to score another goal but an attempt by Lorenzo Atzori following an initiative by Wellington Valentim De Souza was well saved by Sannat’s goalie.

32’ Sannat missed another opportunity to reduce the gap from their opponents when Victoria’s defence hesitated to clear the ball from their area following a corner action but Boubacar Kanta did not manage to capitalise so the defence recovered and cleared the danger.

43’ (0-4)  The Citizens scored their fourth goal when Wellington Valentim De Souza had a good shot that was partially saved by goalie Kyle Attard and from the rebound the same De Souza passed to an unmarked Shaun Attard who netted with a low shot.
