In the last match of the second round of the BOV Gozo Football League of the second division, Victoria Hotspurs earned three deserved points from a convincing 4-0 over Munxar Falcons so that they retained their three-point lead over challengers Sannat Lions. With this result the Hotspurs not only took revenge for the defeat conceded in the match against Munxar Falcons of the first round but also turned a deficit of three points from the Falcons at the end of the first round into an eight-point lead over the same Munxar at the end of the second round.

The Hotspurs came out determined to obtain the win and they practically put their minds at rest from the full points by scoring three goals before the end of the first half.  The Hotspurs continued to dominate after the break so Munxar never seemed in a position that they could earn a positive result from this encounter.

Timeline:

The Hotspurs came out for this match determined to take command of play and produced continuous pressure on Munxar’s defence throughout the first half.  The Hotspurs scored an early goal and converted their superiority by scoring two more goals before the break without conceding any opportunities to their opponents to re-open the issue.

6’ (1-0) Victoria Hotspurs opened the score from a corner action where James Grima’s kick arrived at the second post and Daniel Farrugia came from behind the defence and headed in goal.

24’ (2-0) The Hotspurs doubled the score through an initiative by Wellington Valentim De Souza who passed from the right flank and from his cross Lorenzo Atzori fired in goal with a shot on the run.

27’ (goal disallowed) The Citizens went very close to adding another goal when Munxar’s goalie Joel Micallef made a good intervention to save a strike by Lorenzo Atzori with the aid of the crossbar and from the rebound d Joseph George Vella placed in the bet with a backheel but the goal was disallowed for offside.

30’ (3-0) Victoria increased their lead when Wellington Valentim De Souza passed through Munxar’s defence from the right flank and surprised the goalkeeper with a fine shot from an angled position,

Second Half

Munxar seemed demoralised during the second period and the Hotspurs continued to dictate matters and continued to create danger on Munxar’s goal so that the win could have been with a larger margin.

4’ Munxar’s goalie Joel Micallef was called to make a good save to turn to a corner in an attempt by Lorenzo Atzori.

10’ The Hotspurs were again dangerous through another personal action by Wellington Valentim De Souza but the striker saw his shot from a good position that ended away from goal.

25’ Munxar’s best opportunity to score a consolation goal arrived to Ishmael Belhadj who entered Victoria’s area but goalie Richard Sammut left his position in time and blocked the danger.

30’ (4-0) The Hotspurs sealed the win by scoring the fourth goal which arrived through a shot from an angled position by Daniel Farrugia that ended out of the reach of Munxar’s goalie.

35’ (red card) Victoria was reduced to ten players when substitute Etienne Xiberras was sent off for retaliation.

42’ Victoria Hotspurs went very close to scoring the fifth goal but an effort by Wellington Valentim De Souza following a personal action ended high.
