In the first match from Match-Day 17 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division, SK Victoria Wanderers missed an opportunity to move to the third place on the table as they were held to a draw of four goals by relegation strugglers Xaghra United.  With this result, the two ss remain in the same position on the table as the Citizens are currently in fourth place, while Xaghra remains in second place from the bottom.

For this match, Xaghra, who had Paul Camilleri as a coach for the first time, seemed determined to obtain a win to reach the teams above them on the table. However, they were often erratic in their finishing and found it difficult to take control of play. On the other hand, the Wanderers had a prudent approach and managed to put their heads in front on two occasions but they did not manage to protect their lead and on both occasions, they conceded Xaghra’s equalisers.

Timeline:

Xaghra were more aggressive than their opponents during the opening stages but as time passed by the Wanderers expressed better play and ended the first half in the lead.

2’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis was at the right place and saved a good attempt by Xaghra’s Michael Bezzina.

5’ (post) Xaghra once again threatened Victoria’s defence when Marco Antonio Morgon Filho delivered a good cross inside Victoria’s area but the header by Henrique Da Silva Wilker was stopped by the post and the goalkeeper saved the danger.

9’ The Wanderers replied with a shot from a good position by Kenneth Mercieca but goalie Lorjean Xuereb had a good reaction and saved to a corner.

17’ (0-1) SK Victoria Wanderer opened the score when Caique Silvio Souza Da Silva passed through Xaghra’s defence with personal action and netted with a low shot.

29’ (1-1) Xaghra levelled the score when Camilo Andres Diaz Arias entered Victoria’s area from the right flank and placed in goal with a low shot towards the far corner of the net.

36’ (1-2) The Citizens regained the lead when Kenneth Mercieca released Joseph Saliba inside Xaghra’s area and the latter turned around his direct opponent and concluded in goal with a low shot.

Second Half

Xaghra increased their efforts after the break and for most of the time they produced offensive play in an attempt to recover the deficit.  The Wanderers seemed in good shape but they failed to capitalise on some chances to increase their lead so they ended up ceding Xaghra’s second equaliser which determined the final score.

5’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis made a good save to partially block a shot by Marco Antonio Morgon Filho and from the resultant action the same Morgon Filho saw his effort that missed the target.

10’ The Wanderers could have extended their lead when Kenneth Mercieca came face to face with Xaghra’s goalie, but the latter kept his position and saved the attempt to a corner.

13’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis was well placed and managed to neutralise a good shot by Michael Bezzina.

18’ Xaghra could have capitalised better when Henrique Da Silva Wilker took the ball following a wrong back pass by Victoria’s defence but the striker hit badly and missed the opportunity to conclude towards an open goal.

20’ Xaghra missed a good opportunity to score the equaliser when Marco Antonio Morgon Filho passed inside Victoria’s area but his shot from a good position ended away from goal.

23’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis was called to make another save following a shot by substitute Matthias Cordina.

27’ The Wanderers went again close to extending their lead but a low shot by Caique Silvio Souza Da Silva was blocked by Xaghra’s goalie Lorjean Xuereb.

29’ (2-2) Xaghra managed to level the score through a fine shot by Michael Bezzina that ended out of the reach of Victoria’s goalie following a cross from the left flank by Marco Antonio Morgon Filho.

34’ Xaghra were again dangerous through an effort by substitute Chris Camilleri but the ball ended wide.

41’ Xaghra could have obtained the win but a shot by Chris Camilleri, following a clearance by the defence, was saved with some difficulty by Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis.
