In the most eagerly awaited match from the fourth round of the BOV Gozo Football League Second Division, Sannat Lions claimed an important 4–2 victory over St Lawrence Spurs, a result that sends them alone at the top of the standings.

This was also the first league defeat for St Lawrence Spurs, who therefore lose ground on the other promotion challengers.

The clash between Sannat Lions and St Lawrence Spurs lived up to expectations, as the final score remained uncertain until the closing stages. During the first half, Sannat looked on course for a comfortable win as they went ahead by two goals, but St Lawrence produced a strong reaction early in the second half and managed to cancel the deficit.
In the final half hour, both sides pushed hard for victory, creating several scoring opportunities at both ends. St Lawrence, however, were more erratic in their finishing, while Sannat made better use of their chances to secure three points which may prove decisive in the promotion race.

The standout performer was Sannat’s striker Igor Nedeljkovic, who scored a personal hat-trick, strengthening his position as the division’s leading scorer.

Timeline

First Half:

Sannat Lions delivered a solid performance in the first half, taking control of the match and going into the break with a comfortable two-goal lead. St Lawrence attempted to play offensively but were wasteful in the final third, while also leaving space at the back, which Sannat exploited through dangerous counterattacks.

13’ (1–0) Sannat opened the scoring with the first serious action of the match when Igor Nedeljkovic beat the defence, entered the box ahead of the goalkeeper’s intervention and finished into an empty net.

22’ Sannat threatened again through a shot by Cyriel Buttigieg, which went off target.

26’ (post) St Lawrence had their best chance to equalise when James Grima broke forward, but his effort from outside the box struck the upright.

32’ Sannat responded with a shot from Aaron Azzopardi that went over the bar.

33’ (2–0) Sannat doubled their lead through another action by Igor Nedeljkovic, who surprised the goalkeeper with a low shot.

35’ Sannat’s Nedeljkovic set up Cyriel Buttigieg, who hit a rising shot that missed the target.
41’ Another dangerous attempt from Sannat’s Nedeljkovic, this time from a promising position, finished high.

HT (2–0)

Second Half:

St Lawrence came out determined to react, and after scoring a very early goal, they grew in confidence, managing to equalise and turn the match into a much more balanced contest.
Sannat, however, recovered from this difficult phase, while St Lawrence became increasingly erratic, and the Lions eventually secured the win with two decisive goals.

46’ (2–1) St Lawrence pulled one back just 35 seconds into the second half when Felipe Augusto finished from close range following a low cross from Christian Grima.

49’ Another chance for St Lawrence as a back-heel attempt by Felipe Augusto from a corner went over. From the resulting goal-kick, Sannat launched a counterattack: Paul Said tried to score with the goalkeeper off his line but missed.

61’ (2–2) St Lawrence equalised with a superb top-corner strike from Gabriel Debrincat, unstoppable for the goalkeeper.

67’ Another chance for the Spurs as Felipe Augusto’s solo effort finished wide.

68’ Sannat’s goalkeeper Kyle Attard denied Felipe Augusto twice in quick succession.

72’ (3–2) Sannat regained the lead: from an Aaron Azzopardi corner, Tristan Grech directed the ball goalwards; it was deflected and crossed the line before the goalkeeper managed to stop it.

78’ St Lawrence replied through a dangerous free-kick by Felipe Augusto, saved for a corner by Kyle Attard.

86’ (4–2) Sannat secured the victory with a close-range finish by Igor Nedeljkovic after a low cross from substitute Keiran Calleja, completing the Serbian striker’s hat-trick.
