In the opening match of Match Day-8 of the Second Division championship, St Lawrence Spurs earned three important points with a 2–1 victory over Zebbug Rovers, moving clear at the top of the league table. With this result, St Lawrence have increased the pressure on fellow promotion challengers Sannat Lions and Gharb Rangers, who now must secure a win in their direct encounter to keep pace in the race for promotion.
Both Zebbug Rovers and St Lawrence Spurs needed a victory in this encounter. St Lawrence were looking to consolidate their promotion ambitions, while Zebbug had the opportunity to join the leading teams with three points from this match. The game was a hard-fought contest, with both defences remaining highly organised and focused on neutralising the opposing attackers, which resulted in few clear-cut chances on goal. Zebbug effectively compromised their chances when they were reduced to ten men after scoring the equaliser, while St Lawrence striker Gabriel Debrincat emerged as the key figure of the match by scoring both goals that secured the win.

First Half:
Zebbug started the match more aggressively than their opponents but failed to create dangerous attempts on goal, as St Lawrence were extremely solid in defence. The Spurs managed to take the lead and looked capable of holding onto the advantage, but Zebbug increased their efforts in the closing moments of the first half and managed to equalise. However, they went into the interval disappointed after being reduced to ten men.
16’ (0–1) St Lawrence surprised their opponents by opening the scoring through a low shot from outside the penalty area by Gabriel Debrincat, which caught the goalkeeper off guard.

Second Half:
In the second half, St Lawrence looked to take advantage of their numerical superiority and gradually increased the pressure on the opposing defence. They regained the lead before the hour mark and were then able to control the match until the final whistle.
10’ St Lawrence went close when a close-range effort by Daniel Atzori was saved for a corner by Zebbug goalkeeper Angelo Brignoli.
12’ Zebbug responded with a long-range free-kick by Neil Cassar that sailed over the bar.
