Qala Saints came from three goals down against SK Victoria Wanderers to secure all three points with a 5–3 victory, a result that still leaves them with the possibility of finishing the championship in third place.

This was another typical end-of-season fixture, where teams no longer involved in the title race or relegation battle play without pressure and give opportunities to players who had limited playing time during the campaign, often resulting in high-scoring matches.  However, both teams were seeking a win in this match, not only because the two previous encounters between them in the first two rounds of the championship had ended in draws, but also because the two sides have other important commitments before the end of the season.  Qala Saints are finalists in the BOV GFA Cup, after qualifying with a victory over the same Wanderers in the semi-final, while the Wanderers are aiming to defend the GFA 1st Division Knock Out honour in the final against Kercem Ajax and are also semi-finalists in the MFA BOV Challenge Cup, where they will face Birzebbuga St Peter’s.

Qala Saints showed great character in this match. After recovering from their deficit, they dominated the latter stages and went on to secure a convincing win. For SK Victoria Wanderers, this was yet another match in which they failed to manage their lead, committing costly mistakes in the final phase that compromised their chances of earning even a single point in their final league fixture.

Timeline

32’ Victoria replied with an initiative by Juan Peña, who passed to Sam Harland, but the final shot was deflected by the defence for a corner.

Second Half:

Victoria made an excellent start to the second half, scoring two goals within a few minutes. However, they were unable to protect their three-goal advantage, allowing Qala back into the game, who went on to turn the match around by scoring five unanswered goals.

5’ (0–2) Victoria doubled their lead following a counter-attack, with Juan Peña passing to Mustapha Amodu, who finished easily into the net.

7’ Qala replied with a long-range attempt by Matteo Camilleri, but the ball went wide.

12’ (0–3) penalty The Wanderers extended their lead after being awarded a penalty for a foul by Matteo Camilleri on Matthew David Drury. Juan Peña converted confidently from the spot.

15’ Victoria goalkeeper was again called into action, saving a shot by Joseph Zammit for a corner.

18’ (1–3) Qala reduced the deficit when substitute Victoria goalkeeper Omar Xuereb partially saved a shot from Wallisson Bahia, and Qala substitute Kurt Mifsud reacted quickest to finish the rebound.

26’ (2–3) Qala continued to press and pulled level with a fine strike by Nicholas Inguanez after a cross from Jordi Parnis.

27’ Victoria responded with an effort by Jean Bugeja, which was saved in two attempts by Qala goalkeeper Jayden Sciberras.

33’ Qala were again dangerous when Gabriel Cardona’s shot was turned behind for a corner by Omar Xuereb.

36’ (3–3) Qala equalised when Gilberto Carrara delivered a perfectly weighted cross that split the defence, allowing Wallisson Bahia to head the ball into the net.

38’ (penalty appeals) Qala appealed for a penalty when Wallisson Bahia went down in the area after being closely challenged by a defender.

39’ Victoria launched a counter-attack, but Jean Bugeja’s final effort was well saved by Jayden Sciberras.

39’ (4–3) Qala took the lead when the Victoria goalkeeper partially saved a shot by Joseph Zammit, and Gabriel Cardona was on hand to convert the rebound.

43’ (5–3) Qala practically sealed the win when Gabriel Cardona advanced into the box and squared the ball for Wallisson Bahia, who finished easily with a tap-in.

45+3’ Victoria could have reduced the deficit, but Juan Peña’s shot was saved by Qala goalkeeper Jayden Sciberras.
