In the opening match of the 2026/2027 BOV Gozo Football League First Division campaign, played in front of a sizeable crowd at the Gozo Stadium, Ghajnsielem earned a 3-0 win over promoted side Sannat Lions. With this result, Ghajnsielem confirmed expectations that they can provide the strongest challenge to reigning champions Kercem Ajax, while Sannat found it difficult to compete in their first appearance in the top division after several years in the Second Division.
Both teams included a number of new players, local as well as foreign, acquired during the summer. Some stood out on their debut, while others disappointed. Ghajnsielem, who this season are being led by coach Elton Vella, made important changes in every department from the side that surprised many last season. On the evidence of their opening performance, the team looks stronger and has the potential to spend another season in the upper part of the standings.
Ghajnsielem attackers Ewertton Tom and Jhon Gonzalez, who had impressed last season, again made an excellent start to the campaign and were key figures in securing this result. Ghajnsielem’s victory was effectively decided during the first half. They dominated and controlled the match from the opening minutes, scoring three unanswered goals. After the break, Ghajnsielem managed their comfortable lead, while Sannat compromised any chance of getting back into the match when they had to play the final half-hour with one player less.

First Half:
Ghajnsielem came out aggressively and took command of the match from the early stages. They opened the scoring with an early goal and doubled their lead midway through the half, leaving Sannat demoralised and rarely able to trouble the opposing defence.
9’ Ghajnsielem had the first attempt on goal through Ewertton Tom, but the ball went wide.
14’ Sannat goalkeeper Ignacio Colombo was alert and turned Bruno Da Cruz’s effort behind for a corner.
16’ (0-1) Ghajnsielem opened the scoring with a low shot by Duvan Mosquera, which took a deflection off the defence before ending up in the net.
19’ Sannat replied through an initiative by Hayden Muscat, who delivered a cross into the area, but Yeangel Montero mistimed his header and the ball went over.
23’ (0-2) Ghajnsielem doubled their lead when Jhon Gonzalez headed in from a difficult angle following a cross by Ewertton Tom from the right.
34’ (0-3) Ghajnsielem increased their advantage with a low shot into the corner by Bruno Da Cruz, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of making an interception.

Second Half:
Sannat came out for the second half looking for an early goal in an attempt to reduce the deficit, but Ghajnsielem remained very attentive in defence and chose to protect their lead rather than push to extend the score. As a result, chances were rare and the score remained unchanged.
11’ Sannat threatened through a cross-shot by Yeangel Montero, but the ball went over.
14’ In another good Sannat move, Luiz Fernando’s shot ended against the side-netting.
18’ (red card) Sannat were reduced to ten players when Aaron Azzopardi was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Elizeu in midfield.
28’ Sannat went closest to scoring a consolation goal through a free kick by Jubhel Tsoumou, but the ball went wide.
