Kercem Ajax scored five second-half goals in their match against Ghajnsielem, overtaking them in the standings and remaining the closest challengers to league leaders Xewkija Tigers.

This was Ghajnsielem’s second consecutive defeat, a result which saw them lose further ground on the top teams in the BOV Gozo Football League First Division.  Ghajnsielem compromised their chances of getting something from the match during the first half. Despite enjoying territorial superiority, they failed to make their dominance count and allowed Kercem to stay in the game.

After the break, Kercem responded strongly — showing determination and attacking intent as they completely turned the match around, scoring five times to secure a well-deserved victory that confirmed their ambitions to be serious contenders for the championship.

Match Timeline

First Half:

Ghajnsielem started better and looked more dangerous in attack, while Kercem seemed unsettled and struggled to trouble their opponents’ defence. However, Ghajnsielem failed to capitalise on their chances, and the score remained goalless at the interval.

10’ Ghajnsielem threatened through a shot by Ewerton Tom, which went just wide.

17’ From a Hayden Muscat free kick, Deison Cuero’s header went off target.

19’ (Post) Ghajnsielem came closest when Jhon Gonzalez hit the post from a good position, and from the rebound Naim Belhadj’s effort was saved by goalkeeper Daniel Spiteri.

21’ Kercem had their first attempt through Mario Henrique, but his shot missed the target.

27’ A dangerous Ewerton Tom free kick into the area failed to find a teammate.

44’ Kercem goalkeeper Daniel Spiteri made two fine saves to stop long-range efforts from Cuero.

Second Half:

After the break, Kercem came out much improved and determined to make up for their disappointing first-half display. They were more aggressive and clinical in front of goal, taking control of the game with two quick strikes and, despite going down to ten men, managed to dominate a subdued Ghajnsielem side — adding three more goals to seal an emphatic victory.

50’ (0–1) Kercem took the lead when a cross from Andre Azzopardi was headed goalwards by Dejan Bogdanovic, and Isaias Cruz tapped in from close range.

64’ (0–2) The visitors doubled their lead when Cruz set up Nenem inside the box, who beat the goalkeeper with a low shot.

70’ (Red Card) Kercem were reduced to ten men when Gabriel Farrugia was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

77’ (0–3) Kercem extended their lead through Mateus Lima, who scored directly from a low free kick.

82’ (0–4) A penalty was awarded to Kercem after the Ghajnsielem goalkeeper fouled substitute Andrew Mizzi, and Mario Henrique made no mistake from the spot.

90+2’ (0–5) Isaias Cruz sealed the win with his second goal of the match — a fine individual effort finished with a low shot into the corner.
