In the final match from the seventh round of the BOV Gozo Football League Second Division, Sannat Lions came from behind to secure a 3–1 victory over bottom-placed Munxar Falcons, despite playing almost the entire match with ten men.

Sannat were coming off a negative run of form, having collected just one point from their previous two matches, a spell which cost them their lead at the top of the standings. As a result, they were in need of a win from this encounter in order to draw level with St Lawrence Spurs and Gharb Rangers at the summit. Early in the match, Munxar shocked their opponents by taking the lead, while Sannat were further set back by a red card. However, the Lions responded positively, recovered from a difficult phase, equalised before the break, and then turned the match in their favour early in the second half, managing the game effectively until the final whistle.

Sannat’s standout performer in this victory was striker Igor Nedeljkovic, who scored two crucial goals and remains firmly in contention for the league’s top scorer award.

Timeline

First Half:

Munxar enjoyed a dream start, taking an early lead and benefiting from a numerical advantage. Sannat attempted to recover from the early shock and gradually began to react despite being a man down, making the contest increasingly competitive.

7’ (Red Card) Sannat were reduced to ten men when a short clearance from a corner caused confusion in the box. After two blocked attempts by Kenneth Mizzi, Eric Gauci handled the ball on the goal line. The referee awarded a penalty and showed a red card to Gauci.
8’ (0–1) penalty Munxar capitalised from the penalty spot as Ayesller Carvalho converted from eleven metres.

20’ Sannat created danger, but a shot from an angled position by Kieran Calleja went wide.

21’ Another Sannat attack saw Cyriel Buttigieg break down the left, but Igor Nedeljkovic failed to connect with the low cross.

22’ Munxar responded with a shot on the run by David Bajada, which was blocked by the defence.

27’ (1–1) Munxar goalkeeper Gabriel Saliba failed to hold a cross from James William Meilak, and Igor Nedeljkovic reacted quickest to head home from close range.

36’ Munxar threatened again through a shot by Kenneth Mizzi, but Sannat goalkeeper Kyle Attard made the save.

HT (1-1)

Second Half:

Sannat emerged more aggressive after the break and, despite playing with ten men, turned the scoreline in their favour before controlling the remainder of the match.

3’ (2–1) Sannat took the lead from a corner as Igor Nedeljkovic nodded the ball into the centre, allowing Kieran Calleja to finish with a powerful central shot.
7’ Munxar goalkeeper Gabriel Saliba rushed off his line to block a clear chance by Igor Nedeljkovic inside the box.

20’ (Penalty appeals) Sannat appealed for a penalty after Igor Nedeljkovic went to ground following a challenge by the goalkeeper.

36’ Gabriel Saliba kept Munxar in the game by tipping a free kick from Igor Nedeljkovic over the bar.

41’ Sannat went close again, but a low shot by Igor Nedeljkovic was saved for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Carl Gauci headed over.

43’ Munxar nearly equalised when a low cross by Ayesller Carvalho evaded the goalkeeper, but Emanuel Bennici cleared the danger just in time.

44’ Munxar threatened once more with a long-range effort by Ayesller Carvalho, which was saved by Sannat goalkeeper Kyle Attard.

45+2’ – Munxar remained dangerous from a free kick by Ayesller Carvalho that sailed over the bar.

45+3’ (3–1) Sannat sealed the victory after winning possession in midfield. Igor Nedeljkovic rounded the goalkeeper, who was off his line, and calmly slotted into an empty net.
