In the first match of the preliminary round of the Second Division Knock-Out competition, Oratory Youths earned a convincing 4-1 win over Gharb Rangers to confirm their ambition of being among the leading challengers for honours in the category this season.
Oratory’s victory was fully deserved as they dominated their opponents throughout the first half, scoring four goals and giving themselves the comfort to manage the result after the break. Oratory’s two foreign forwards, Lucas Barcik, who scored a hat-trick, and Dalton Pereira, both produced excellent performances and shared the four goals that decided the match.
Gharb, on the other hand, found it difficult to offer a real challenge, particularly as they had only one foreign player on the pitch. They never looked capable of getting back into the match, although they did reduce the deficit from a penalty midway through the second half.
Timeline
First Half:
Oratory took command from the opening minutes and managed to open the scoring with two early goals. Gharb tried to react, but Oratory defended well and effectively secured the win with two further goals before the end of the half.
4’ Oratory went close to taking the lead, but Dalton Pereira’s close-range finish was well blocked by goalkeeper Gabriel Parnis.
9’ (1-0) Oratory opened the scoring when Lucas Barcik was unmarked at the far post and finished from close range after a cross from the left beat the defence.
10’ (2-0) Gharb looked unsettled and conceded another goal less than a minute later when Lucas Barcik collected the ball outside the area, avoided the goalkeeper’s challenge and finished easily into an empty net.
21’ Gharb goalkeeper Gabriel Parnis was alert and saved Dalton Pereira’s shot with some difficulty.
37’ Gharb could have made better use of a promising situation, but Harry Paulin’s shot from a good position was cleared by defender Daniel Azzopardi.
38’ In another Gharb move, they missed an opportunity to get back into the match when Andrew Ofulue’s shot from a good position went wide.
41’ (3-0) Oratory extended their lead when Dalton Pereira made good progress and delivered a low cross for Lucas Barcik to arrive behind the defence and tap the ball into the net.
45’ Gharb again went close to reducing the deficit when Andrew Ofulue entered the area alone, but his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Paul Cremona.
45+1’ (4-0) Oratory scored again when Dalton Pereira produced a personal move, avoided the goalkeeper’s challenge and finished easily into an empty net.

Second Half:
Oratory lowered the tempo after the break and neutralised Gharb’s efforts to get back into the match. Chances were rare, and Gharb only managed to score a consolation goal.
10’ Gharb went close to scoring from a corner, but Daniel Farrugia’s header went over.
24’ (1-4) penalty Gharb managed to reduce the deficit when they were awarded a penalty for substitute Eman Bugeja’s foul on Bernard Camilleri. Andrew Ofulue scored from the rebound after his first effort from the spot was partially saved by goalkeeper Paul Cremona.
