Ghajnsielem registered their second consecutive league win when they defeated SK Victoria Wanderers 2-0 in their Matchday Two fixture. With this result, Ghajnsielem have yet to concede a goal after two matches and confirmed their ambition to be serious contenders for honours this season.
Ghajnsielem’s win came after a match that proved more difficult than expected. The Blacks were favourites to take the three points and scored an early goal, but the Wanderers reacted well and, for long periods, held the initiative while creating several scoring opportunities. Ghajnsielem goalkeeper Owen Attard had to make a number of decisive interventions to deny their opponents an equaliser. Ghajnsielem, however, remained very disciplined and, in the second half, began to exploit the spaces in the Victoria defence before securing the win with a second goal late in the match.
SK Victoria Wanderers had also come into the match on the back of a win and were looking to consolidate their positive start to the campaign with a strong result against a higher-rated side. However, Victoria compromised their chances of earning at least a point through defensive mistakes and erratic finishing from their forwards. They left the pitch empty-handed despite striking the woodwork three times and producing a strong level of football for more than an hour.

First Half:
Ghajnsielem made the perfect start and scored after only a few minutes, but they failed to take full command of the match. As time went on, the Wanderers pushed out of defence and applied pressure on their opponents in an attempt to find an equaliser.
2’ Ghajnsielem could have made better use of an early opportunity, but Duvan Mosquera failed to finish after uncertainty from the Victoria goalkeeper, and the defence recovered to clear the danger.
4’ (1-0) Ghajnsielem opened the scoring when Elizeu beat the defence down the left and delivered a cross for Jhon Gonzalez, who finished with a back-heel.
12’ SK Victoria Wanderers missed an opportunity to create more danger when Amodu mistimed his header from Luke Fenech’s cross and the ball went well wide.
21’ Ghajnsielem defender Elizeu made a decisive intervention, clearing for a corner before Amodu could finish after finding himself alone in front of the goalkeeper.
22’ (post) Victoria went very close to equalising when Amodu entered the area and sent a cross towards the far post. Defender Ian Xuereb miscued his attempted clearance, but the ball struck the post and the goalkeeper recovered to deal with the danger.
30’ SK Victoria Wanderers appealed for a penalty when Amodu went down while entering the area alone, but the referee allowed play to continue.
40’ In another Victoria move, Emerson Zammit’s shot was central and the goalkeeper saved without difficulty.
45+4’ Ghajnsielem goalkeeper Owen Attard came off his line at the right moment to block Amodu’s attempt on the ground after the forward had entered the area alone following a long goal kick that caught out the defence.

Second Half:
The second half became much more open as the Wanderers continued to press for an equaliser, while Ghajnsielem operated with dangerous counter-attacks. As a result, there were several scoring chances at both ends.
6’ (crossbar) The Wanderers were unlucky when Kender Hernandez’s long-range strike surprised the goalkeeper but struck the crossbar. From the rebound, Gabriel Cardona was denied a finish as the defence cleared the ball from the area with some difficulty.
12’ Ghajnsielem replied with a Stefan Cassar shot, but it was central and goalkeeper Andriy Etienne Vella dealt with it comfortably.
17’ Ghajnsielem built a rather prolonged move in Victoria’s defensive zone, but Joseph Xerri eventually mistimed his header and the Victoria goalkeeper was alert to save the danger.
18’ (crossbar) SK Victoria Wanderers again went close to equalising, but Amodu’s lob came back off the crossbar.
23’ Victoria were threatening once more, but Emerson Zammit’s shot from a good position after a short defensive clearance was blocked by the goalkeeper.
26’ Ghajnsielem could have created more danger, but Duvan Mosquera’s shot went wide.

35’ (2-0) penalty Ghajnsielem effectively secured the three points when they were awarded a penalty for Neil Camilleri’s foul on Duvan Mosquera. Ewertton Tom made no mistake from the spot.
40’ Victoria had the final opportunity to reduce the deficit through a Mateo Escorcia shot, but goalkeeper Owen Attard saved.
