The current leaders of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division Ghajnsielem ended the first round as sole leaders and with a three-point lead over their closest rivals as they obtained the full points at stake from a 4-2 win over SK Victoria Wanderers.

The Blacks were favourites to obtain an easy win over the relegations strugglers and during the opening stages they lived up to the expectations as they scored two goals during the opening minutes of the encounter.  Although Ghajnsielem maintained the territorial supremacy and also added a third goal that arrived near the end of the first, they ended up conceding a reaction from the Citizens son that for some time the outcome of the encounter became uncertain.  Ghajnsielem however scored a fourth goal near the end of the match and put their minds at rest from the win for the remaining minutes of play.

The protagonist for Ghajnsielem in this result was once again their striker Igor Nedeljkovic who registered a personal hat-trick and consolidated his position as the leader of the Top-Scorer table with twelve goals from the first eight matches of the championship

Timeline

Ghajnsielem came out with the intention to produce pressure over their opponents form the early stages and managed to score two early goals so that they paved the way to the win.

3’ (0-1) penalty – Ghajnsielem were awarded a penalty when Victoria’s keeper partially saved a shot by Igor Nedeljkovic.  From the resultant melee Igor Nedeljkovic took the ball but was floored inside the area by Gabriel Cardona and the same striker netted withn his shot form the spot kick.

5’ (0-2) Ghajnsielem doubled the score when Jhon Arboleda Valencia passed through Victoria’s defence from the left flank and from his low shot Rodney Buttigieg fired in goal from close distance.

10’ SK Victoria Wanderers replied through an initiative by Aud-Gustine James Obaje who delivered a cross towards the goalmouth but Emerson Zammit failed to take the ball to conclude towards goal.

11’ Ghajnsielem were again dangerous through a shot by Dejan Bogdanovic, after receiving from Kurt Grima, which was well saved by Victoria’s keeper Giacomo Ratto.

13’ Victoria could have reduced the deficit when a cross by Emerson Zammit arrived to an unmarked Gabriel Cardona who had his shot aimed towards the far post that ended inches wide.

23’ Ghajnsielem went again close to score another goal when Kurt Grima produced a personal action on the right flank but his cross passed in front of Victoria’s goal while the strikers missed the opportunity to connect for the tap-ion.

39’ (0-3) Ghajnsielem score their third goal through a direct free kick by Igor Nedeljkovic that was out of the reach of Victoria’s keeper.

43’ Ghajnsielem lost a good opportunity to add another goal when a free kick by Dejan Bogdanovic was prolonged inside Victoria’s area with a back-heel by Rodney Buttigieg and the ball arrived to Jhon Arboleda Valencia who had his close ranged shot blocked with difficulty by goalie Giacomo Ratto.

HT (0-3)

Ghajnsielem continued to administer their lead after the break but they reduced their intensity in their offensive actions so that the Wanderers gained confidence and managed to re-open the issue.

12’ (1-3) SK Victoria Wanderers reduced the score when Aud-Gustine James Obaje entered Ghajnsielem’s territory with a personal action, entered the area, turned around the goalkeeper and placed easily into an open goal.

15’ Ghajnsielem replied through a shot by substitute Michael Bezzina that was well saved by Victoria’s keeper Giacomo Ratto.

21’ Victoria were again dangerous through a shot by Emerson Zammit following a clearance byu the defence that was neutralised by goalie Adrian Parnis.

Ghajnsielem continued to show some over confidence in their play

24’ (2-3) SK Victoria Wanderers re-opened the match by reducing the gap to just one goal when Aud-Guistine James Obaje passed through Ghajnsielem’s rear guard and from his cross Gabrial Cardona placed in goal from close distance.

30’ Victoria’s goalie Giacomo Ratto was called to make a good save following an attempt directly from a free kick by Igor Nedeljkovic.

32’ (red card) SK Victoria Wanderers were reduced to ten players when Kersten Grima was sent off for a second yellow card received for a foul on Jhon Arboleda Valencia.

33’ From the resukltant free kick the attempt by Jhon Arboleda Valencia was saved by Victoria’s goalie.

34’ SK Vitoria Wanderers had their best opportunity to level the score but a curling shot by Gabriel Cardona following a personal action form the elft flank missed the target.

35’ (2-4) Ghajnsielem put their minds at rest from the win by scoring the fourth goal that arrived through a shot from an angled position by Igor Nedeljkovic with the ball ending in goal despite the attempt of the goalkeeper to block the danger.

37’ Victoria’s goalie Giacomo Ratto made the best save of the afternoon when he managed to block a strike by substitute Ismael Behadj following an action by the most dangerous player on the field of play throughout the encounter Jhon Arboleda Valencia.
