In the opening match from Matchday 13 of the Second Division league, St Lawrence Spurs claimed a dramatic 2–1 victory over Zebbug Rovers to maintain their position at the top of the standings.

The match was fiercely contested, with the winning goal arriving just seconds before the final whistle. St Lawrence needed a win to protect their lead and apply further pressure on the teams behind them, while Zebbug once again showed they have the quality to be one of the most competitive sides this season. Despite another strong performance, Zebbug left empty-handed.

In this encounter, both teams’ defenders stood out, keeping opposing attackers quiet for long spells. Ultimately, it was St Lawrence striker Felipe Augusto who proved decisive once more, scoring both goals that settled the match and strengthening his comfortable lead as the Second Division’s top scorer.

Timeline

First Half:

Both teams began brightly, pushing to take control of the match. Early on, each side created moments where they could have threatened the opposing goal. As the half progressed, St Lawrence increased their pressure and took a deserved lead, but Zebbug responded quickly to keep the match finely balanced.

19’ Zebbug goalkeeper Francesco Portelli blocked a powerful effort from Felipe Augusto taken from a good position.

24’ (crossbar) St Lawrence were unlucky when a strike by Charlon Farrugia rattled the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.

29’ (1–0) St Lawrence opened the scoring through a direct free-kick from Felipe Augusto, whose precise effort surprised the Zebbug goalkeeper.

31’ (post) Zebbug almost equalised, but a low shot from Haraan Goncalves Barbosa struck the post.

32’ (1–1) Zebbug restored parity when Haraan Goncalves Barbosa held the ball in the box and laid it off to Jake Sacco, who beat his marker and finished low into the net.

HT (1–1)

Second Half:

The second half remained evenly matched, but St Lawrence pushed harder as they sought a crucial victory. Zebbug stayed disciplined defensively, limiting clear chances despite long periods of pressure. Just when the match seemed destined for a draw, St Lawrence found the decisive moment deep into stoppage time.

12’ Zebbug goalkeeper Francesco Portelli produced another strong save to keep out Gabriel Debrincat’s effort.

30’ (post) St Lawrence were denied again when Felipe Augusto broke into the box but saw his shot come off the post.

45+4’ (2–1) St Lawrence scored the winning goal when substitute Jurgen Mario Portelli delivered a low cross from the right, allowing Felipe Augusto to slip behind the defence and tap the ball into the net.
