Xewkija Tigers overturned a deficit to secure a 2–1 victory over Xaghra United, bouncing back from a difficult period during which they had compromised their chances of continuing their challenge for the league title.
Both teams entered this match determined to secure the points for different reasons, and as a result the outcome remained uncertain until the final whistle. Xewkija were looking to make amends for a run of consecutive defeats and needed a win to climb back into second place, while Xaghra were aiming to maintain a comfortable advantage over the team at the bottom of the table.
The first half was very lively, with both sides pushing forward in attack. In addition to the three goals that decided the encounter, both Xewkija and Xaghra created several other scoring opportunities. In the second half, Xewkija were more cautious as they sought to protect their narrow lead, while Xaghra increased their efforts in an attempt to overturn the deficit. Despite sustained pressure on the opposing defence, Xaghra failed to capitalise on their chances and left the pitch empty-handed, once again finding themselves in danger of slipping back to the bottom of the standings.

Timeline
First Half:
Xaghra appeared more adventurous in the opening minutes and managed to take the lead, but Xewkija reacted immediately. After restoring parity, they went on to turn the score in their favour, making the match more open and entertaining.
11’ (0–1) Xaghra opened the scoring when Pedrinho won possession in midfield and, after advancing, picked out Ibrahim Salis, despite being surrounded by four defenders, and the forward entered the box and beat the goalkeeper from an ideal position.
14’ Xaghra missed another opportunity when Lucas Farrugia delivered a cross across goal, but Ibrahim Salis arrived late and failed to convert from a promising position.
18’ (1–1) Xewkija equalised when Abou Toure sent in a cross from the right and Ezequiel Ruiz broke free from the defence to head the ball into the net.
21’ Xaghra threatened again as Fabian John Xuereb met a Pedrinho free kick, but his close-range effort went wide.
22’ Xewkija goalkeeper Nikola Kosanin was called into action to save a good attempt by Junior Claudir.
29’ (2–1) Xewkija took the lead when Abou Toure laid the ball back to Ezequiel Ruiz, who beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the corner.
45+1’ Xaghra responded with a shot by Ibrahim Salis that struck the side netting.
45+3’ In another Xaghra move, a further attempt by Ibrahim Salis missed the target.

Second Half:
The contest remained evenly fought after the break, with both teams continuing to push for a positive result. Xaghra increased the pressure on Xewkija’s defence, while Xewkija focused on protecting their slender lead and looked to exploit counter-attacking opportunities to put the game beyond doubt.
7’ Xewkija threatened when Julian Farrugia played the ball to Claudio Frances, but the Argentine forward mis-hit his shot and missed the target.
8’ Xaghra missed a golden chance when, from a Lucas Farrugia cross, Ibrahim Salis somehow headed over the crossbar from close range.
26’ Xaghra came close to equalising when Pedrinho found Ibrahim Salis, but a poor first touch inside the box allowed the chance to slip away.
28’ Xewkija replied with a counter-attack finished by a shot from Joseph Mario Vella, which went wide.
33’ (Goal disallowed) Xewkija thought they had extended their lead when Denzil Bugeja crossed from the right and Abou Toure finished with a back-heel at the near post, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
38’ Xaghra were dangerous from a corner delivered by Pedrinho, with Ezequiel Ruiz almost turning the ball into his own net while clearing with a header.
42’ Xaghra threatened again from another Pedrinho corner, but Fabian John Xuereb’s header was saved by goalkeeper Nikola Kosanin and turned out for another corner.
44’ Xewkija continued to come under pressure and once more risked an own goal when Joseph Mario Vella hit badly an attempted clearance from a Pedrinho free kick, with the ball narrowly missing the target.
